What Are The 7Fates?

The award-winning musical septet BTS may be spending time on their vacation, but that hasn’t stopped the diverse range of content that has been dropping from HYBE and BTS. They’ve been posting left to right on Instagram and Weverse, not to mention commenting on ARMY's posts every day. Among these forms of media is the new webtoon and web novel, "7FATES: CHAKHO", which will release on Saturday, January 15 at 9 AM KST on NAVER’s WEBTOON and Wattpad apps. But what exactly do we know about this upcoming story? Let’s look into what we know so far.

Background

On Thursday, November 4, HYBE released their new video titled “2021 HYBE Briefing with the Community,” where Shawn Hwangbo, General Manager of HYBE, talked about their Intellectual Property (IP) concerning the development of the original project stories featuring HYBE artists. From webtoons, animations and games to music and web novels, these creations featuring artists from HYBE are one of the company’s attempts in transmedia storytelling. It is also in conjunction with HYBE and Naver’s WEBTOON collaboration for the “Super Casting project.”

Now, what is the “Super Casting project,” and does it have anything to do with BTS’ "7FATES: CHAKHO"? According to the entertainment news website, Deadline, this project is “a new group of partnerships with global entertainment companies to create webcomics or web novels for each platform. Super Casting allows major entertainment brands to work with WEBTOON and attempt to maximize the IP value chain across platforms and formats.” As far as its relation with BTS’ webtoon and web novel is concerned, the story is a part of the project.

The synopsis of "7FATES: CHAKHO" is as follows: “7FATES: CHAKHO is an urban fantasy story set in the future and inspired by the Chakhogapsa (착호갑사) tiger hunters of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. This epic tale follows seven young men bound by fate. After growing up together through a series of trials and tribulations, they must become a unified group of seven to unlock their destiny.”

Teasers

In anticipation of "7FATES", the social media handles of the upcoming story released a schedule on December 19 that showed the dates and times at which photos and videos will drop. Before this, a group teaser and picture, individual images and videos were released; in the videos, the members of BTS shared their perspectives on fate. On December 20, a 34-minute CCTV footage was live-streamed on the BANGTANTV YouTube channel. The footage shows the seven members of BTS doing mundane stuff when suddenly they are interrupted by the presence of a mysterious green light that sucks them in, leaving behind shiny green particles.

WEBTOON released a teaser episode for each member per day from December 24 to 30. In line with the schedule, HYBE dropped a group photo of BTS on January 2. On January 5, "7FATES: CHAKHO" social media handles announced that the official soundtrack of the upcoming webtoon and web novel, which will be produced by SUGA and have vocals by Jungkook, will be coming soon. There is no doubt that ARMYs are very excited about new music coming from BTS!

On January 8, the official teaser of "7FATES" and seven photos of each member were released, which used hashtags that revealed their fictional names in the webtoon and web novel as follows: RM as Dogeon, Jin as Hwan, SUGA as Cein, j-hope as Hosu, Jimin as Haru, V as Jooan, and Jungkook as Zeha. Finally, on January 11, another set of individual concept photos and interviews dropped, where each member briefly talked about their characters and what we should look forward to in "7FATES: CHAKHO".
