Previously on BTS: December 30 to January 5-Ascending Dreams, Inspirational Young Men – A New Decade
Cheers! While we all celebrated the new year last week, the members were busy as ever, celebrating Taehyung’s 24th birthday and flying from South Korea to New York to perform in front of more than 1.5 million people at Times Square. Map of the Soul: Persona ranked #66 on the UK’s year-end albums chart of 2019, marking the first time an Asian album has appeared on the chart in history. The new year, or rather, decade, has just begun, and we can't wait to see what it brings for BTS!
Music cares, BTS cares
As if 2019 hadn't already held enough surprises for us, here is yet another one! The customized microphones BTS used during their “Love Yourself World Tour” concert series will be auctioned before the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on January 26, 2020. The whole profit will go to the MusiCares Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by the Recording Academy, which BTS are voting members of. Meant for musicians to have a place to turn to in times of financial, personal, or medical crisis, MusiCares is something to support! The seven signed microphones are expected to sell for $10,000-$20,000 as a group, as stated by Julien's Auctions. However, there are already 9 bids, with the top bid coming in at $32,500 USD.

A “Veautiful” Birthday
On December 30, “Veloved” member Taehyung turned 24 and hashtags, such as #BornToVLoved, #BeautifulSceneryTaehyung, #OurPreciousWinterBearV, #SoulfulVoiceTaehyung, and #OurHappinessPreacher, occupied nearly all 30 spots of the worldwide Twitter trends. Although he had to celebrate half of his birthday on a plane – as the boys had a performance for the annual “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” at New York Times Square coming up – Taehyung greeted ARMY through a V Live live stream later.
How to end a decade properly
The members performed for more than 1.5 million people at New York City’s famous Times Square with an epic New Year’s Eve performance. BTS was scheduled to perform for eight minutes in “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2020.” ARMYs were both happy for them and scared for their future chances to grab some tickets for the upcoming tour. Tweets, such as “Who is the guy in the sparkly turtleneck and glittery jacket from Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve,” proved that this performance not only made more people join the fandom, but also increased the chances of the next ticket sale to become a new version of a FPS (first-person shooter) video game.
The septet surprised ARMY with a choreographed performance of Make It Right and made their way through the crowd to the big stage to perform Boy with Luv. During the performance, Jimin's jacket got stuck over his head, and he smiled his way through it, being the cutest fluff-ball in Times Square—okay, back to business. If you watch the latest “BANGTAN BOMB” video, you will see that there were actually advertisements for V's birthday (and BTS in general) displayed on huge LCD-screens during their performance in Times Square. What a feeling!

Translations by K-diamonds & BTS-themed email addresses
As BTS becomes more and more the global group they aspire to be, the fan community grows as well on a world-wide scale. The Korean fan community BTKU announced a global translation project for international ARMYs. As stated on BTKU’s Facebook page, the main objective for this project is to quickly deliver BTS-related news to international fans, who frequently struggle to receive accurate and quick information on the group. You can find the English version of their website under www.officialbts.com/en. They have also created another project titled “Fan Email” where you can sign up for your very own BTS-themed email address (i.e. bangtan@btsarmy.life). More information can be found on their official website.
Starting the year with not one, but two, Daesangs
The 34th Golden Disc Awards kicked off on January 4 at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea. The first part of this two-day award ceremony highlighted the biggest digital releases in 2019, while the second part recognized achievements in the category of physical album releases.
Although BTS did not attend the ceremonies on the first day, they took home both the Daesang for “Digital Song of the Year” and a Bonsang in the digital song category. Bang Sihyuk also received an award for “Producer of the Year” and accepted BTS’ awards on their behalf. He ended his speech with the words, “I will now read this letter written by the members for the fans: ‘To ARMYs all over the world who love our music, thank you very much. We’ll continue to be with you through our music in 2020 and in the future as well. As long as ARMY is there to listen to our music, BTS is happy, and BTS will be happy.’”

On the second day of the award ceremony, BTS won four more awards: “Fans Choice Kpop Star,” “TikTok's Popularity Award,” “Physical Album Bonsang,” and the Daesang for “Physical Album of the Year.” BTS is now the only artist in history to win both Daesangs at the Golden Disc Awards in the same year. RM thanked ARMYs for their support and continued by stating that their decade was filled with the name “Bangtan Sonyeondan” and that he wished for the 2020's to be filled with the name ARMY as well. He further spoke about how every artist's fairness and sincerity should reach the general public and that the former decade’s wrongdoings should stay in the 2010's. He, on behalf of BTS and ARMY, wished the 2020's to be a better decade by the way, if you haven’t seen the performances, do yourself a favor and check them out - you won’t be sorry, ARMY!
As always, purple you!
