BTS Paved the Way. Again!

Our boys started out the event strong, smiling through interviews and meetups with western celebs while wearing matching Alexander McQueen Tuxedos on the red carpet. Everyone wanted to meet the boy band shaking up the American music industry. “Our main goal for today is to find BTS,” joked the Jonas Brothers, just before exiting their limo. During BTS’ interviews, other stars can be seen craning their heads for a better gaze at the seven kings of K-pop.

From there the day just got better as many people, including BTS themselves, were surprised by their being awarded Top Social Artist right there on the red carpet. 2019 marks the third year in a row that BTS has snatched this award, and with more ARMY following in their wake than ever, there’s no reason to think that this will be the last time either.

Once the party really got started, we were gifted with glimpses of the band throughout the night as they bopped along to the hit songs performed and munched away on the snacks provided. They were given shout-outs sporadically throughout the night, and ARMY’s very vocal approval was as present as ever.

The moment of truth grew closer and closer. Energy was building and stakes were high. Up against BTS for the coveted title were some of the biggest names in the industry: Maroon 5, Dan and Shay, Panic! At the Disco, and Imagine Dragons - the group who won this same award last year. Up against such competition, many ARMYs felt it was a toss up as to whether or not the boys would go home with both trophies in their bag.

With bated breath, slow recognition slid across the audience and viewers as Justin Hartley and Chrissy Metz walked onto the stand. For those of us who aren’t good with names, these two celebrities were the same friendly faces who presented BTS with the Top Social Artist award in 2018. Hope and awe began to build in an almost tangible way and breathy chants of “BTS! BTS!” began to crop up across the building.

May 1st, 2019 will go down in history as the day BTS became the first Asian act to ever win the Major Category Billboard award of Best Duo/Group. Later that evening, after impromptu photo shoots with Tori Kelly, Becky G, Ciara, Khalid, and Drake himself, BTS and Halsey burned the stage to cinders with their collaborative performance. The fanchant felt like a victory cry.

It’s as V said earlier that day in an interview: “Every moment is a precious memory.” We’re so lucky that we can be a part of them with BTS.
