AWARDS SEASON WITH BTS
BTS is approaching the year-end with a bag full of awards. There's a lot to catch up on. So, without digressing, let's dive right in!
Smooth Like Butter
On October 28, 2021, the American Music Awards announced their nominees. The nominations are based on "key fan interactions'' — streaming, song sales, album sales, and radio airplay which are tracked by Billboard and MRC Data. BTS was nominated in three categories. The fan voting done through TikTok and the website continued till November 16.
AMAs began with a red carpet ceremony on November 23 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and the main event was hosted by Cardi B. Wherever BTS go, they always stay connected to their roots. So, it came as no surprise that the suits donned by the boys from Louis Vuitton Spring 2022 Menswear collection, had a special Hanbok-style tie at the waist — a nod to the ribbon tied in traditional Korean clothing.
When BTS was called up on stage to receive the award for Favorite Pop Duo or Group, j-hope thanked ARMY for winning the award for three years in a row. The boys also won Favorite Pop Song (Butter) for the first time.
It was a historical moment when BTS became the first Asian act to win the Artist of the Year Award. Calling it a "miracle", RM humbly reflected on when they first performed DNA four years ago. He said, "Nobody could have ever bet on the odds of us standing here receiving this award. Except you all, ARMY. Except you all". The impact of this award could not be more emphasized than when South Korea's President Moon Jae-in congratulated BTS, remarking that this win would help Koreans boost their confidence in Korean culture.
While the AMAs boasted a powerful lineup of performances, BTS stood out for taking the stage twice. First with Coldplay to debut the live rendition of their hit collaboration, My Universe – a performance most anticipated by ARMY. BTS and Coldplay made us all groove with their energy; the harmonizing and the vocal switches between Chris Martin and BTS members, along with individual rap parts from j-hope and SUGA were the perfect mix to capture the audience's hearts. It carried us to a euphoric universe, creating a wonderful feeling of togetherness. The second performance was when BTS smoothly closed the star-studded show with a glamorous performance of Butter.
Despite Megan Thee Stallion dropping out days before the awards due to an "unexpected personal matter,” BTS put up a flawless stage. Wearing suits in various shades of yellow, they dominated the stage, making the audience dance enthusiastically to the beat. Towards the end, the Butter themed stage lights changed to purple — once again portraying how BTS always has ARMY close to their hearts.
Light It Up Like Dynamite
After closing their four day concert: Permission To Dance On Stage - LA, BTS opened the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball 2021 with spectacular performances of Dynamite (Holiday remix) and Butter at The Forum in Los Angeles. Before the performance, a little surprise awaited Jin when the show's host, Jojo Wright, brought a cake on stage prompting everyone to sing "Happy Birthday." The show will be broadcasted again on December 26, 10am KST through The CW Network.
There were more awards with which BTS was honored during this period but could not attend due to scheduling conflicts. Additionally, on December 6, it was announced that BTS would be taking a "second official extended period of rest." Let's take a quick glance at the major awards which happened on the other side of the globe.
Did You See My Bag?
At Asia Artist Awards (AAA) 2021, BTS bagged the Song of the Year for Butter, a title they previously held for Dynamite. Melon Music Awards 2021 was no different, as BTS won a total of six awards including a Daesang for Song of the Year. Also, our favorite choreographer, Son Sung Deuk earned an award for Best Performance Director.
At the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards, BTS bagged nine awards, making a clean sweep of all four Daesangs. This would become BTS' sixth consecutive Daesang for the Artist of the Year and third in a row for Song of the Year. The other two are Album of the Year (BE) and Worldwide Icon of the Year. BTS also won the three nominated categories at People's Choice Awards 2021 while Butter was named as the Record of the Year by Variety. Regardless of not being able to attend these, BTS made sure to send videos to each event, expressing their thanks to ARMY.
