A Charge of Joyfulness: BTS’s Dynamite Review

The long-awaited single Dynamite is a true explosion of energy, joy, and positive vibes, all wrapped up in a funky retro package. Being the first all-English song in the band’s seven-year-long discography, it was an unplanned surprise intended to be the bearer of cheer during these trying times the world is experiencing.

This funky track begins with the Golden Maknae Jungkook’s melodic opening, which is also the main motive of the chorus: “Cos ah ah I’m in the stars tonight. So watch me bring the fire and set the night alight.” The song picks up from there, and the catchy melody immediately gets you moving. “Life is sweet as honey”, cheerfully remind RM and SUGA in the first and second verse respectively. Dynamite moves into the chorus with energy and positivity following all the way through: “Cos ah ah I’m in the stars tonight. So watch me bring the fire and set the night alight. Shining through the city with a little funk and soul. So I’mma light it up like dynamite, woah.

The song continues on with the funky rhythm as the boys are inviting the listeners to dance, move, and express their happiness: “Bring a friend, join the crowd, whoever wanna come along. Word up, talk the talk, just move like we off the wall,” sings V. BTS brings a boost of confidence in the pre-chorus: “Disco overload, I’m into that, I’m good to go. I’m diamond, you know I glow up,” exclaim j-hope in the first and Jimin in the second pre-chorus.

The post-chorus kicks into full funk drive - trumpets, a groovy bassline, and disco vibes make your body move on its own. There’s also a surprising twist — a clear key change, going into the last chorus. The little nuance brings freshness to the track and amps up the mood for the song’s finale.

During the press conference for the single, Jin elaborated on the reason for releasing Dynamite as a single: “[...] through this song, we wanted to say, this time is difficult, but let’s overcome this together. And we wanted to deliver that through singing and dancing, which is what we do best.” The track does exactly that - the lyrics send a message of confidence and happiness, ready to lift the spirits up and get you vibin’! This lively disco pop track is truly a needed surge of brightness and happiness that ARMY has been waiting for.
