Previously on BTS - Hiatus?
Updated: Dec 31, 2019
When BigHit shared the press release that BTS would be on a 2-month hiatus/vacation, ARMYs celebrated BTS’ well-deserved vacation upon hearing the news. Some ARMYs placed their social media on "rest", spoke of catching up on all BTS content and saving money for all future BTS purchases.
How wrong were we? Let's start at the beginning of August.
Week 5th - 10th
Market Watch confirmed BTS as a powerhouse of the music industry. The article recapped all BTS sales and other accomplishments.
Billboard reported BTS attained 99.3 million in tour sales, with the band projected to make over 9 figures in tour revenue by the end of 2019.
Week 5th - 10th August
On August 7th, BTS released the docu-series "Bring The Soul" in theatres worldwide. In the movie, "members shared their real and untold stories by opening up to each other and the fans."
Bring The Soul docu-series created a record as it was released in 110 theatres worldwide.
BTS received a Double Million + Double Platinum Certifications From Gaon for the album Love Yourself: Tear and the BTS World OST, respectively. We also learned:
BTS attains a million sales certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RAIJ) with their singles Lights/ Boy With Luv Japan release. BTS is the only non-Japanese artist to attain this accolade.
BTS 2018 Memories DVD was also released during this week. They shared concert performances, behind the scenes videos, and images of all of BTS activities and success of 2018.
Week 11th - 17th
BTS Vacation begins
Lotte Duty-Free concert was the last performance done by BTS before their vacation began. BTS was last seen on stage at the end of their European Love Yourself - Speak Yourself Tour in France. Thus the Lotte Duty-Free dominant stage performances and new looks (*cough cough* Long Hair Bangtan *cough cough*) caused quite a stir within the fandom.
By the end of the first few weeks of BTS hiatus, we soon realized that although BTS was on vacation, we weren’t.
Starting with Bighit release of the trailer for BTS’ six-episode docu-series Bring The Soul with the premiere date on the 27th of August. This series teased at a more in-depth discussion with the members, than those seen in the BTS movie.
Forbes also reported that BTS became the first K-Pop act to chart three albums on the Billboard 200 twice simultaneously. A feat accomplished by the BTS OST for their game BTS WORLD re-entering the charts.
Week 18th - 24th
During this time, news broke that Map of the Soul: Persona was certified gold by the RIAA after 5 months of its release.
US history was made yet again by BTS when they became the first Kpop act to occupy three spots on the Billboard 200 for more than one week in a row.
ARMYs were surprised to learn that at the end of August, BTS would release their last summer package, which highlights their home country of South Korea.
Week 25th - 31st
The much anticipated BANGTAN BOMB from 2019 Billboard Music Awards was finally released and it was much more than we ARMYs expected.
ARMYs also enjoyed the first episode of Bring the Soul docu-series titled "Challenge."
As the docu-series premiered, at the end of August, Forbes reported that the film Bring The Soul earned 24.3 million dollars as it earned another record for profit made for an event movie.
Although unable to attend, BTS won two MTV VMAs in the Best Group and Best Kpop Category.
Week 1st -7th
ARMYs all over the world took to all social media platforms to share our birthday greetings to our maknae Jeon Jungkook. Along with projects, donations, letters and creations, ARMYs may have also crashed a website or two in our enthusiasm to share our love for Jungkook (sorry Twitter). While also taking over the Twitter trends for the whole day, which caught the eye of some famous people (Hi Mr. William Shatner).
Week 8th - 14th
ARMYs around the world were giddy with excitement to celebrate our BTS leader's Birthday. This time, although we didn't break any websites, we still took over all social media platforms to shower Namjoon with beautiful words, creations, and projects. One such project highlighted RM's love of nature as 250 fans planted a forest in his honor. ARMYs outpouring of love was so immense that RM wrote a very heartfelt letter to us.
Army also celebrated the first anniversary of BTS speech at the UN Youth Assembly by reminiscing on how it touched them at that time and the past year.
Week 15th - 21st
ARMYs learned on the 16th that BTS was no longer on break and were spotted leaving Incheon Airport. Detective ARMYs saw mics attached to BTS clothing in photos and summarised that they were on their way to film content overseas (*wink maybe Bon Voyage 4 wink*).
Week 15th - 21st
Welcome to Tik Tok BTS! Much to the surprise of ARMYs BTS launched a Tik Tok account in the last week of September and became one of the fastest-growing and biggest accounts of the app's history.
BTS were announced as performers for the Jingle Ball concert on Dec 6th.
Although on vacation the members still shared music they created with ARMYs.
In August, at the beginning of BTS hiatus, V shared his solo song Winter Bear. His first song sung entirely in English. V created a calming and introspective song and video for ARMYs to enjoy.
Although it was his birthday, Jungkook gifted ARMYs a snippet of new music that he intends to release in the near future. Although short, his melodic, deep voice captivated ARMYs and left us anticipating the new song from him.
Chicken Noodle Soup
In the month of August J-Hope came out of hiatus to fly to the US for “important business”. Soon ARMYs theorized that J-Hope and Becky G were working together on a collaboration. This theory was confirmed in the last week of September when the Latin singer tweeted out that she had a secret to which BTS replied from their official account “Hey @iambeckyg, I have a secret, too...🤭😭👍 #CNS”. After a series of back and forth tweets between the two singers, it was revealed that Jhope and Becky G had collaborated and remade the classic song from 2006 Chicken Noodle Soup original sung by Young B.
The classic song made a huge splash, as J-Hope achieved many records and accomplishments as a solo Korean artist on the Billboard chart. Additionally, Jhope started a Dance Challenge to accompany the song, with members from BTS sharing their version of it on his VLIVE and on their Tik Tok account in front of a picturesque location in New Zealand, which we learned was the place they went to after their hiatus.
As you can see, although BTS may have been on vacation, we ARMYs had a lot to keep up with. New content to watch and new songs to stream. In the end, luckily for ARMYs, there was never any hiatus. BTS is our vacation and there was nowhere else we would have rather been at than exactly where we were these last two months.
